CALLAO CITY LIGHTS WILL BROADCAST LIVE THE FIRST OFFICIAL CANARIAN WRESTLING MATCH HELD IN THE PENINSULA.
Next Saturday, May 17, 2025, the emblematic Plaza del Callao in Madrid will be the scene of a historic day for Canarian wrestling. For the first time, an official wrestling match of the DISA Canary Islands Government Tournament will be held in the peninsula, pitting Club Saladar de Jandía against Club Candelaria de Mirca. The match, which is expected to be attended by a large representation of fans from both clubs and Canarian residents in Madrid, will be broadcast live on the outdoor screens of the Cines Callao.
The event, which has been promoted by the Canarian Wrestling Federation and the Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, will be held in a wrestling arena specially installed for the occasion, with a portable grandstand with capacity for a hundred spectators.
For such a special occasion, the fight will feature one of the youngest sands in the world, coming from the material spat out by the volcano of La Palma, as a tribute and wink to the inhabitants of the island who suffered the consequences of the eruption a few years ago.
The event coincides on the same day with the traditional pilgrimage organized by the Casa de Canarias in Madrid, making it a historic day for Canarian culture in the capital of Spain.
The day will not only include the official wrestling, but will also offer various activities during the morning to raise awareness of other native Canarian sports. Among them, there will be exhibitions of the impressive Lucha del Palo Canaria, a traditional discipline that combines technique and skill with sticks.
Exhibition on the terrace of Cines Callao
This event is part of the activities programmed by the Government of the Canary Islands on the occasion of the Day of the Canary Islands and seeks to promote and give visibility to Canarian indigenous sports in the rest of the country. The day will close with a private event on the terrace of the Callao Cinemas, where the Exhibition of Canarian Wrestling Paintings by the Canarian painter Ciro Miró will be presented.
The May 17 event in Madrid represents a unique opportunity to bring the cultural and sporting richness of the Canary Islands to the Spanish mainland, strengthening ties between communities and promoting the practice of traditional sports that are part of Spain’s intangible heritage.
